When is ASB?
ASB will run from Saturday, March 8th through Sunday, March 16th. Alternative Winter Breaks will run from Sunday, January 5th through Sunday, January 12th.
When and where is registration?
Registration will take place through Eventbrite at asbregistration.eventbrite.com beginning on Saturday, November 23rd at 8AM and ending at 5PM on Friday, February 28th, 2014.
What information will I need when registering?
Along with basic personal information (name, phone number, emergency contacts, etc.), you will also need your insurance company provider & policy number.
Who is able to register?
All fully matriculated undergraduate students (including international students) are eligible to participate in ASB. However, CELOP students are not eligible, and graduate students may only participate as chaperons, not volunteers.
What if I register for more than one trip?
YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM ALL TRIPS AND BECOME INELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. This includes registering for a trip and the waitlist.
How much does ASB cost?
The trip costs vary based on mode of transportation. The Boston trip is $200; public transportation trips are $350; driving trips are $415; and flying trips are $900. The cost of Alternative Winter Break (flying trip) is $800.
Can I opt to meet the Winter Break trip at the Los Angeles, California airport (LAX) instead of flying with the trip from Boston in January?
Yes, if you choose to book your own flight you will be asked to pay $300 instead of the full $800. After registering, you will be emailed with the flight details and a time range for when you will need to arrive at LAX on January 5th. If you choose to book your own flight then you will also be expected to find your own way back to Boston and will be given a time frame in which to depart from LAX on January 12th.
What is the refund policy?
Payments are non-refundable.
Am I eligible for an ASB scholarship?
ASB scholarships are need-based only. Typically scholarships go only to students who are Pell Grant eligible. There are a limited number of scholarships available. Scholarships are not offered for flying trips.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
Use the following promotional codes when checking out to apply for scholarships: "415Dollartrip" for all driving trips; "350Dollartrip" for either public transportation trip; and "200Dollartrip" for the Boston. These codes will immediately require you to pay a deposit depending on the amount of the trip: Boston $50; public transportation and driving $200. After you have entered the code, you will be asked to submit a short essay (max 250 words) to answer the following:
Please provide a short narative describing why you should be considered for an ASB Scholarship.
When will I be notified of my scholarship status?
Scholarship decisions will be given out on a rolling basis beginning on December 13th.
When will I have to pay my remaining balance?
If Alternative Spring Breaks determines that you are ineligible for a scholarship, you will be required to pay the remaining balance of your trip. Any remaining balances will be due by 5 p.m. on January 16.
What do I do if I have trouble registering?
The CSC will be open from 7am-noon on Saturday, November 23rd. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the office at 617-353-4710. After that point, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
What does the registration cost cover?
The trip cost covers food, travel, and lodging. Personal expenses will include meals on travel days, any souvenirs, or costs for outside activities.
What if all of the trips I’d like to go on are full?
If all of the trips you would like to go on are filled but there are still some open trips, you can opt to be put on a waitlist. You can register for the waitlist at any time and will have the opportunity to list your trip preferences. However, you cannot register for a trip and the waitlist. If you do so then you will not be allowed to participate in ASB.
How will I know if I am pulled off the waitlist?
You will be contacted via telephone if a spot opens up. If you cannot be reached by telephone, we will send a follow-up email.
When will I know if I am pulled off the waitlist?
We will keep offering open spots until two days before Spring Break (March 7). If you are pulled off the waitlist, you will receive a phone call or an email.
Do I need to be van trained if I want to drive for ASB?
Yes. ASB participants who are willing to drive will need to be van trained this academic year by the Community Service Center. If you were van trained during FYSOP24 or the fall 2013 semester, you do not need to be trained again. However, if you were van trained at any point before that (ex: Spring 2013 semester) you will need to be re-trained. We highly recommend that students choosing to register for driving trips get van trained. We will need as many willing drivers as possible on each trip. Please do not register for one of our farther driving trips (Springfield; Fort Smith; Natchez; New Orleans; Big Cypress; Hobe Sound; and Omaha) if you are not willing to be van trained. Due to the length of the drive, we will need as many drivers as possible on these trips.
